This summer we're running on half our usual water storage
for Porirua, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Wellington, while we
upgrade our storage lakes. But if we all take measures to use a
little less water, it should see us through.
Save water in the garden:
Test the soil before you water, if it's damp 10cm
below the surface you don't need to water
Target watering straight to the roots, at a rate the
soil can absorb without runoff
Time for 30 minutes if you need to water with
sprinklers or irrigation systems

up milk plan
By SARAH BURTON
About 12,000 Wellington primary schoolchildren
will be given free milk every morning as part of
Fonterra s Milk For Schools programme -- but not
until later this year.
Sixty-four Wellington primary schools have
signed up so far and 624 nationwide.
Fonterra Group spokeswoman Carly Robinson
said while it was very early days it was great to
see a fast response.
Within minutes of the news spreading, our
team started receiving expressions of interest
from schools and we ve even had a number flow in
over the Christmas break, she said.
Ms Robinson said milk was an important build-
ing block for good nutrition. We want Kiwis to
grow up drinking milk because it s good for them.
The programme will roll out region by region,
beginning with Southland towards the end of term
one. Wellington is scheduled for late in 2013.
By the end of term one, 2014, all schools that
want to take part in the programme will be able to
have access to milk every school day.
As well as free delivery of the milk, the schools
will be given free fridges and recycling kits.
Three more pools
Three new pool facilities are
opening in Wellington City
this week, part of a $12
million surge in pools invest-
ment by the city council.
A hydrotherapy pool at the
Wellington Regional Aquatic
Centre in Kilbirnie and a new
learners facility at Karori
Pool were opened on Thur-
sday. And on Sunday Ber-
hampore School will celebrate
its new school pool enclosure,
a result of the council s School
Pools Partnership Fund.
The $2.4 million hydro-
therapy pool is expected to be
heavily used. The warmer
water is beneficial for pain
relief and rehabilitation.
A large field in Newlands is now home to 30 raised
vegetable beds, fruit trees, berries and a native
plant nursery. The land for the Jay St Community
Garden, behind Newlands College, was on the
Wellington City Council s for-sale list until Char-
maine Meyers and Peter Gilberd asked to estab-
lish a community garden and nursery.
