Something different: The Bad Boys of Dance are set to rock
Wellington with Rock the Ballet.
By AMY JACKMAN
Rasta Thomas' father sent him to ballet
lessons as a punishment and now he is
preparing to rock the stage at the St James
Theatre next week.
Thomas, 30, is the principal dancer and director
of the Bad Boys of Dance.
They arrive in town next week to perform Rock
Their show is a fusion of classic ballet blended
with musical theatre, hip hop, tap, contemporary
dance and gymnastics.
It features some of the biggest hits from U2,
Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen, Coldplay and
When he was a young boy, Thomas was enrolled
in various martial arts classes. He did not always
behave and at age seven he was sent to ballet
classes as a punishment.
For being rude and disrespectful in karate
class one day my dad said, If you don't improve
your behaviour I'm going to put you in ballet','' he
So it was punishment. I just wanted to be a
young athlete or a young action hero. I definitely
didn't think ballet was in my future.
I laugh and laugh now and my dad is always
amused by the story.
I asked him if he planned it and he definitely
didn't plan it.''
Thomas' ballet teacher saw promise early on
and encouraged him to keep up the classes.
He has been a principal dancer with more than
20 professional companies, including American
Ballet Theatre and Japan's K-Ballet.
He has performed at the Academy Awards,
danced at the White House and made the film One
Last Dance with Patrick Swayze.
The idea for Rock the Ballet came from a wish
to see more young people in the audience.
Finally after a career dancing with other com-
panies, I have been put in a position to call a few
shots and I really want to do something that could
make ballet sexy again.
People see ballet as a little boring, dated or
only for an elite audience.
This is somewhat true and we definitely want
to break that stereotype.''
Rock the Ballet is on at the St James Theatre
from June 5 to 10. Tickets at Ticketek.
