Mixing medicine and
politics in the 1840s
By REBECCA THOMSON
Political power: Dr Isaac
Featherston St is one of
Wellington city's oldest
It runs between
Whitmore St and
Hunter St, has existed
since the late 1870s
and was named after
Dr Isaac Earl Feather-
Dr Featherston was a
the first Superintend-
ent of Wellington Prov-
ince, and the first Agent-General for New Zealand
Born in Durham, England, in March 1813, he
was educated at a private school in Tamworth and
studied medicine in Edinburgh.
Dr Featherston accepted the post of ship's sur-
geon on the New Zealand Company ship The
Olympus, which reached Wellington in 1841.
Though he practised medicine, Dr Featherston
also immersed himself in Wellington's cultural
and political life.
He served as a Mechanics Institute committee
member, was secretary of the Wellington Horticul-
tural and Botanical Society and, in 1845, became
the first editor of the Wellington Independent.
He was also one of the prime movers in setting
up the Wellington Savings Bank, New Zealand's
first savings bank.
In 1846, Dr Featherston was elected unopposed
as Wellington Province's superintendent, an office
he held until 1870.
When the first New Zealand Parliament was
formed in 1853, Dr Featherston represented
Whanganui. He then represented Wellington city
from 1855 till 1870. Eventually, Dr Featherston
accepted the post of Agent-General in London. He
died in Sussex in 1876.
