Farewell: Fruiterer Barry Williams is closing his shop after 26 years.

After 26 years of business, Churchill
Drive Fruit Shop is shutting its doors.
The fruit shop is a family business
run by owner Barry Williams, one of
the longest serving tenants of the Chur-
chill Drive shopping complex.
Progressive Enterprises Limited has
been granted resource consent to
enlarge its Countdown at Crofton
Downs shopping centre.
Because of the Countdown redevelop-
ment, all independent businesses are to
move out by July.
Mr Williams said had been been look-
ing for other locations, but so far had
found nothing suitable.
I ll be closing the store, he said. I ll
lose the business and the people work-
ing will lose their jobs.
It s a shame that independents find
it difficult to compete with
The downside will be less
opportunities and choices for the con-
sumers. Customers come in and check
our prices and come back after checking
the supermarket s prices.
Mr Williams still believed the expan-
sion to be positive.
The expansion will be a good thing
for the area. It s time to move on. The
place needs upgrading and I think
they ll do a very good job.
But not all customers were so
positive, said Mr Williams.
Lots of people aren t happy. Part of
the reason is that some people don t
like change. I appreciate everyone who
has come to me and said they re going
to miss us.
Mr Williams said he would miss the
customers the most, as well as his
seven staff members and the fruit and
A lot of people have put themselves
through uni working at the shop. I ll
miss watching them put themselves
through education, he said.
Progressive Enterprises national
communications manager Luke
Schepen said the new supermarket was
expected to open in mid-2013.
More than $22 million is to be
invested in the redevelopment, includ-
ing the purchase of the land, construc-
tion and supermarket fit-out.
The expanded supermarket will be
more than 60 per cent bigger than the
current Countdown and will measure
about 3400 square metres.
The complex will also include smaller
retail shops and facilities such as a cafe
and a pharmacy.
About 130 people will be employed at
the new supermarket, nearly double
the 69 at the current Countdown.
The existing Countdown will remain
open for part of the construction pro-
cess and then will be demolished to
enable the new store to be completed.
