Can do better
BEER Cuba St -- you need to pick up
It was my birthday on
Monday and I thought lunch in Cuba
St would be nice.
Olive, a long-term Cuba St resi-
dent, seemed a good choice.
In fact, it wasn t.
The staff barely acknowledged us
and when we looked for a menu,
there was none.
Finally, after the woman behind
the counter checked through a
forest s worth of paper, we were
given a dirty, scrappy, crumpled
piece of paper.
It was not inspiring, so we left in
search of greater plates, settling on
Roxy Cafe further along. Though it
was very quiet, I d heard the brunch
menu was fantastic.
The menu was eclectic, which I
love. Pasta, fish cakes, ricotta
parcels, quesadilla and steak: some-
thing for everyone.
We chose Asian-infused seared
beef salad with udon noodles and let-
tuce ($16) and fish of the day, blue
wharehou with spinach and potato
gratin ($21) with a side of vegetables
($6). Entrees weren t offered.
Although not a big deal, the waiter
did forget to tell us what the fish and
vegetables were, and didn t pour our
wine, but our bottle of Astrolabe

The meals arrived promptly and
we were very impressed.
The flavours were superb -- the
beef was perfect and the herbs comp-
lemented it nicely. The pan-fried fish

We had planned to take our time
with the meal, although the waiter
clearly had other plans.
He closed the restaurant and
changed the tables for the evening,
all before 2pm.
We wanted to see a dessert menu,
but one wasn t offered during lunch.
We inquired whether there might
be some form of counter food, or,
being a special occasion, if they
might have something out the back.
They didn t.
There was not even an offer of tea

morning coffee, I would expect to be
able to nibble on a slice of brownie or,
at very least, a chocolate truffle.
A sign on the counter said the cafe
was to be rebranded Cuba St Bistro
All up our meal came to $83, a
good price for a very tasty meal.
I just hope that with the rebrand-
ing comes some staff retraining and
a few sweet delights.
