I was lonely and bored and I d just moved to
Wellington. I wanted to try something different.
Johnson (not her real name), who is in her mid 30s, has
a normal office day job, and is a prostitute part-time.
She is staging the a one-hour show Part Time
Prostitute in the Fringe Festival.
Johnson said she quite liked the fringes of society and
doing things just for the sake of trying them.
I thought it would be like having a one-night stand
without the effort.
There was something dirty, sleazy, crazy about it
that was intriguing.
The media portrayal of prostitutes also intrigued
They re always portrayed as either crack whores or
courtesans. [Prostitutes] are kind of this mysterious
woman who can unlock the secrets to the world. I
thought that sounded fun. And the money.
Johnson said she wanted to travel, but knew going
overseas could mean a huge increase in interest on her
I used to be kept awake at night thinking about debt.
I calculated it would take me nine years to pay it off,
and 12 before I could leave.
I ve done it in two.
The day I paid off my student loan was amazing.
Each client and each job was different, Johnson said.
It s a completely customised service.
There was a huge variety in the type of clients as
Johnson has kept a record of the men she s
encountered and tried to look at the statistics.
I was so disappointed I couldn t classify the type of
man. I wanted to be able to nail down three things, say
they are old, lonely and socially inept . But everyone s
Through her statistics, Johnson is able to say the men
are generally between 30 and 50.
According to her blog, on the first night she worked,
Johnson serviced four men, and earned $400. She has
kept track of how many jobs she s done.
Over two years she has done 95 shifts, 305 jobs and
had 178 unique customers, an average of three a week.
Does she ever think that s a lot of men?
Not really, it s just a number.
Johnson also said having sex for her job did not
impact on her sexual enthusiasm in her personal life.
At work, I m providing a service. In my personal life,
it s more 50/50, and it s for fun. There s no watching the
Her job hasn t stopped her dating
men, but she is aware of being honest
to those she has feelings for.
I ve become a bit of a prudish dater,
at least four of five dates [before I d sleep
with them]. I have to really get to know
him and trust him before I can tell say,
I m a part-time prostitute .
When you start having sex with
someone there s an expectation you are only
having sex with them. If that s not the case
you should be clear about it.
She was very careful with who she told
about her part-time job, and not that many
people knew. My mum kind of does. She knows
I m putting on the play and that it s based on my
own experiences. She s not that happy about it.
Because her mother was from a different era, she
still saw prostitution as selling one s body .
Even in the dictionary, Johnson said, prostitute
comes with definitions such as betrayer, cheater, one
who sells one s time for unworthy purposes.
But I don t think I sell my body. I do a great service
for society. And I m pretty good at it.
I don t want my mum to not be proud of me, but I
am proud of what I do. I think she ll come around in
Johnson said when she began, in November 2009,
she was absolutely scared. I wondered, What do I
do? How do you spend an hour with a client?
The show covers a lot of that. It breaks down
the specifics of how you get into it. It s sort of a
how-to guide for those thinking about going into
The show ran through the craziest bits about the
job, she said. I wanted to speak about my
experiences in a mid-range brothel. I wanted to give
the dirt and the details, say the things that everyone
says they want to hear, but when they do, they say, Oh,
maybe I didn t want to know that . So, is it fun? Johnson
said it could be, depending on the client. You have good
days and off days. But I stand by my right to not enjoy my
job every day. In the end it is a customer service job.
There were no requests that particularly offended her,
though sometimes she did think, That s a little out there .
What offends me is when a guy asks for something and
I say no , then he asks again. Johnson does not see
herself being in the sex industry forever. There will come
a time when I lack enthusiasm, but I could say that about
any job. I don t want to get lacklustre, I will get out before
I lose my sparkle.
