The best of
dining in 2011
Quality dining: The Hippopotamus offers outstanding food, service and decor.
One thing's for sure. The
Wellingtonian staff enjoy
From cheap-as-chips yum cha at
the Grand Century to top-of-the-
range dining at Hippopotamus, we
sampled an excellent array of Wel-
lington's edible offerings in 2011.
It is little surprise Emma Beer,
given her very suitable surname,
found herself drawn to The Hop
Garden and Little Beer Quarter.
She said it was hard to chose
between them, but eventually gave
an honorable mention goes to The
Hop Garden ( a great atmosphere
and beer selection'') and named the
Little Beer Quarter as one of her
favourite establishments. It would,
she said, become a regular summer
A huge selection of boutique
beers and a decent pub-like menu
make it a great place for an after-
work drink or a weekend outing,''
She was also whisked away to
Italy, courtesy of an exquisitely
cooked meal at MariLuca Ristoro.
The Crazy Horse Steakhouse,
with its extensive wine list, profes-
sional staff and beautifully cooked
steaks, also made her list.
Joseph Romanos loved the big,
well-cooked meals at the Speight's
Ale House in the Shepherd's Arms
in Tinakori Rd and the outstanding
service, food and decor at
Though Hippopotamus was very
expensive, the food and service
were outstanding, he said.
The ideal place to go for a really
Miramar was the place to be this
year. New eateries there included
The Gasworks, La Boca Loca and
Capitol, inside the Roxy Cinema.
Joseph reported favourably on
the Monteith's-owned Gasworks.
What makes it a bit special is
the clever way the owners have
incorporated the walls from the old
Gasworks inside. This gives the
place a real feeling of history,'' he
Also in Miramar is The Larder,
where Rebecca Thomson enjoyed
the perfect weekend brunch and
was lucky enough to spot Hobbit
star James Nesbitt.
Miramar local Jacob Brown, son
of Al Brown, runs The Larder
kitchen and serves dishes made
from fresh, local produce, and it
The Bangalore Polo Club, Ances-
tral, Pizzeria Nappoli and Avida
also opened this year. All were well
received by The Wellingtonian staff
and choosing the best was a diffi-
cult task. Pizzeria Nappoli and
Avida won out, though.
Pizzeria Napoli, which opened in
the small space that was once the
grungy Kenny's Cafe, is nominated
for its scrumptious thin-crust pizza
and warm atmosphere.
And Avida, formerly the Black
Harp, makes the list for its stylish
makeover, top-notch service and
tasty, well-cooked dishes.
