Jeff's year keeps getting better
By EMMA BEER
Strength conditioning: Hurricanes prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen with Thorndon School pupils Thomas McCracken, 9,
left, and Riley Leger, 5.
It s been a good year for new Hur-
ricane Jeff Toomaga-Allen.
The 21-year-old tighthead prop
was called into the Wellington
Lions squad and made his provin-
cial debut against Manawatu pre-
He was named Sportsman of
the Year for his club, Marist St
Pat s, an award that has pre-
viously gone to All Black Victor
Vito and former Hurricane Ged
Now Toomaga-Allen has been
signed by the Hurricanes.
He said earlier this year that
being signed by the Lions was a
childhood dream. To now have
been signed by the Hurricanes
was amazing, he said.
I m very blessed, that s what I
am. I ve been given good
It had not been easy though.
Toomaga-Allen said he had had to
work very hard.
Did I what! You have to work
But I reckon, to be honest, the
hard work hasn t started.
Once we start the season, it s
going to be boom, boom, boom.
He said he had noticed some
differences already between the
Lions and the Hurricanes.
Not [coaching] styles as such --
there s just another level of pro-
fessionalism, just upping the ante.
Emphasising even more of a
professional attitude towards
things -- and not only in rugby, but
what you do outside.
Toomaga-Allen, who has been
training to be a teacher, spent
much of the year working as an
after-school carer at Thorndon
Working with children was
much the same as dealing with
the men in the team, he said.
They re all kids, all kids at
heart. They [the men] bicker too,
but just those childhood bickers,
like, Oh, who used my deodorant .
It s good, I reckon, if you can
connect with younger to older
Then going into a rugby team
you ve experienced more of life.
Toomaga-Allen said he enjoyed
being a tighthead prop and felt it
was an important position.
You re the anchor, anchor in
the scrum, anchor of the team.
At 1.8 metres (just over 61G2 ft)
and weighing 118 kilograms,
Toomaga-Allen looks like he can
hold his own.
But he will be coming up
against some much more experi-
enced front rowers, including All
Blacks Ben and Owen Franks.
How does he plan to prepare to
play against some of the world s
Keep my feet grounded. By
staying humble and doing all the
little things I can do and have to
do to be better.
That s the thing. I can t change
the fact that I m young and I can t
change the fact that I don t have
as much experience. But I can
change what I do at training and
the attitude I take into it.
