High hopes: Stefan Smith is aiming for the
2012 London Olympics.
Wellington distance runner Stefan Smith is
jumping across the ditch to run the steeple-
chase at the big Zatopek meet in Melbourne
on December 10.
Smith, 23, recently placed third in the
national half-marathon with a solid time of
1 hour 10 minutes 1 second.
The former Hawke's Bay athlete said he
was in the best shape of his life.
I'm just getting into that mode where I
can handle training hard as well as racing
a lot faster,'' he said.
Over the next couple of weeks I'll be
getting the legs moving faster and I'll be
feeling really good by the time I head over
Smith said he preferred cross-country to
track. He competes over a range of dis-
tances from five kilometres to the half-
marathon. He is contesting the steeple-
chase at the Zatopek because he feels it is

Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Smith has been running competitively
since he was a child but started getting
serious when he moved to Wellington at 19.
I moved down to Wellington to study and
met a lot of guys who were better than me.
I'm quite competitive, so that made me
want to be better,'' he said.
His father, a keen runner, is also his
He was pretty handy in his day. Bit
older now. He still gets out for a few lazy
warm-down and warm-up loops.''
Smith has kept busy over the past year,
most of which he spent in Hawke's Bay.
I've been working fulltime, studying
fulltime and training fulltime, so it's been
pretty hard the last couple of months,'' he
Looking forward to moving back down to
Wellington in January to finish my major
papers so I'll just be studying and running.''
