Run the tap before drinking
Some plumbing fittings allow tiny traces of metals to accumulate in water that has
been sitting in the tap for several hours.
Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that, before
using water, you flush a mugful from your tap each morning to remove any metals
that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.
All households are advised to take this precaution, whether they are on private or public
water supply. Landlords are also asked to make their tenants aware of this advice.
Soft, slightly acidic water can dissolve metals. In New Zealand, the heavy metals that
dissolve into drinking water from plumbing fittings can include lead and copper.
For more information, call the Drinking Water Assessment Unit of the
Wellington Regional Public Health Service on 570 9002.

sort and pack
books to be
sent to Fiji.
School children in rural Fiji will have some-
thing to smile about next month.
A shipment of about 45,000 books was this
week sent to Suva, to be distributed to schools
in remote areas.
The books were collected from across the
lower North Island by Mormon Helping
Hands, the volunteer arm of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This is a wonderful initiative,'' said Mere
Tora, acting head of Mission for the Fijian
There are 12,000 primary children in the
eastern division in Fiji and many without
reading materials. I can see the bright smiles
of these children as they receive these beauti-
ful books in their schools. Thank you for your
