crowd BUT they are often there when no one else is.
Sam Just like being in Italy
Buona sera Italia! A flight to Italy
might not be within your budget,
but Wellington s newest Italian
restaurant is the next best thing.
Mariluca Ristoro is housed in what
used to be Maria Pia s in Mulgrave St,
Thorndon. It has been open only a few
weeks, and with Italian being my favour-
ite style of cooking, I had to visit.
We dined early on Saturday evening,
before the All Blacks match against
We arrived and were very warmly
greeted by the waiters and maitre d , who
was happily doing the books.
Entering in the side door, instead of
from the street, gave a great feeling of
being tucked away in the back streets of
Naples. Inside was light, white and
warm. It was small and intimate with
what appeared to be real family photo-
graphs on the wall.
Our table, beautifully laid, was in the
front room. Our waiter, Italian with the
accent to prove it, told us the specials and
left us to ponder the menu.
We took quite some time to decide
because conversation between old friends
took over, but never did our waiter push
for orders. He was the perfect host.
Finally there was a break in the con-
versation and we started with bruschetta
For a main, I choose the special --
whitebait and pasta on lemon zest ($25).
The others ordered a pappardelle con
anatra, pasta ribbons with braised duck
sauce ($26.50), and the scotch fillet
Unsure of what Italian wine might be
best suited we sought advice, which the
waiter gave willingly.
I ordered a glass of Soave ($9.50) and
my companions a bottle of Montepulciano
D Abruzzo ($38), which was recom-
mended to complement the gamey flavour
of the duck. Both were fantastic choices
and said to be the perfect wine match .
The men working in the restaurant
seemed to have service down to a fine art.
They knew how to gauge if conver-
sation would be appropriate -- in our case
it was -- and were full of anecdotes and
advice when the moment called for it.
The bruschetta was lovely -- two topped
with spinach and pine nuts, and two with
Presentation was superb.
My whitebait sat beautifully on top of
four slices of lemon. The steak was sliced,
accentuating the pink meat inside, and
was served with rocket and cubed
Every meal was delicious.
The vinaigrette on the fillet was great,
the duck delectable, and the whitebait
Of course, we had to try dessert.
Tiramisu, torta di mandorle e arance
(almond and orange cake with caramel
gelato) and budinoal ciocolato (chocolate
panna cotta), all $14.50 each.
The cake was scrumptious, and the
panna cotta and tiramisu went down a
In true Italian style, we were offered a
limoncello to finish the evening.
Two and a half hours after arriving, we
realised if we didn t get a move along we
would miss the haka, so we said goodbye.
Our meal cost $189.50.
I have not a bad word to say about any
aspect of the meal, from the service to the
food. I will certainly be returning -- ciao.
