Heat pumps are hailed as one of the most cost-
effec ve and efficient ways of hea ng homes and
offices, but if you choose the wrong brand, are poorly
advised on size and placement, and theres no back-up
servicing, its all going to end up with disappointment.
In the last 14
based Abode Air
heat pumps around
the region. Owner-
Strawbridge has built
up the business by
doggedly pursuing a
reputaton for quality
Its hard for the
public because they
can get swamped with marketng hype and technical specifcatons. They
think heat pumps are all the same, and all come out of China.
Theyre not, and they dont.
An inferior brand may deliver poor heatng and cooling performance, then
conk out completely afer two years. Parts for such brands arent always
Quality brands such as Daikin make up the major
brands that Abode are agents for to keep the heat
fowing even on frosty mornings, and with regular
servicing should last for many years,
Mr Strawbridge says.
Maintenance is the other aspect that owners tend to forget. Its not enough
just to vacuum the flters on the interior unit now and again though thats
the level of servicing that some suppliers charge for. Mr Strawbridge says its
the outdoor units that are more important to smooth running, as their moving
parts are vulnerable to intrusion by grit, sand, spiders, plants, etc.
Six of Abodes more than 20 staff are dedicated to keeping heatng, ventlaton
and air conditoning equipment of all brands in tp-top running order. A
litle spent on regular servicing every one or two years ensures ongoing
performance and extends the life of the machinery.
Its a family run frm but dont make the mistake of assuming Abode is small-
tme. Mr Strawbridge and his team are right now handling a $300,000 + air
conditoning contract on the new indoor stadium in Kilbirnie, and have tackled
$1.0 million + design/build air conditoning/ventlaton jobs for downtown
Wellington office blocks.
The company has IQP registraton, which means it has the expertse and ability
to design, and sign-off on council requirements, for commercial heatng,
ventlaton and air conditoning systems.
Mr Strawbridge is proud of his no job too small or too big approach and
says if theres one thing Abode is the very best at, its ducted systems.
Centralised air conditoning and heatng systems which arent suitable for
every home and office offer a total soluton for warmth, cooling, fresh air,
and condensaton control. Winter mould and mildew may never be a problem
